A popular theory that's made the internet rounds is that the lyrics to "The 12 Days of Christmas" are coded references to Christianity; the song was written to help Christians learn and pass on the tenets of their faith while avoiding persecution. Note: it doesn’t matter to me whether this is a secret code or just someone’s creative thinking, the idea is curious. ~Kathy 1 The partridge in the pear tree, naturally, represents Jesus Christ. 2 Turtle Doves = The Old and New Testaments 3 French Hens = Faith, Hope and Charity, the Theological Virtues 4 Calling Birds = the Four Gospels and/or the Four Evangelists 5 Golden Rings = The first Five Books of the Old Testament, the "Pentateuch," which gives the history of man's fall from grace. 6 Geese A-laying = the six days of creation 7 Swans A-swimming = the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, the seven sacraments 8 Maids A-milking = the eight beatitudes 9 Ladies Dancing = the nine Fruits of the Holy Spirit 10 Lords A-leaping = the ten commandments 11 Pipers Piping = the eleven faithful apostles 12 Drummers Drumming = the twelve points of doctrine in the Apostle's Creed Calendar of Events: Jan. 1 Feast of Mary, Mother of God Holy Day of Obligation Mass-Dec. 31, 6pm, IC Butternut Mass-Jan. 1, 9am, SA Park Falls Jan. 2 all classes meet Jan. 6 Epiphany = the twelfth day of Christmas May all your troubles last as long as your New Year’s resolutions.

The Nativity of the Lord Our hearts are aglow with the joy of Christmas! Our senses are alive with the season, from the rich smells of evergreen and gingerbread to the feel of crisp air on our skin and the warmth of a loved one’s embrace. At some point in the holiday hustle and bustle, take a few moments of quiet. In the silence, reflect on the other senses of the season. Imagine the cool damp of an animal stable, the earthy smell of hay and feed, and the crisp night air blowing in softly. Imagine kneeling beside an exhausted, joyful mother and a relieved, protective father. Imagine an infant wrapped in cloth scraps held out to your open arms. Imagine holding the infant Jesus. As his eyes meet yours, welcome into your heart the greatest gift of Christmas. Children’s Program: We would like to invite all our youth -K-12- to participate in our annual children’s program during the 4:30pm mass at St. Anthony’s on Christmas Eve. This is a wonderful way for the children to remember the magic of Christ’s birth. The children will be presenting a short skit about Jesus’ birth told from the perspective of two stars. We’ll have one practice on December 24 in the church from 10-11:30 am. We also need youth to lead the singing at the Christmas eve mass. Please contact Kathy in the parish office if your child/ren would like to participate in the skit or sing. Knowing the numbers makes planning so much easier. Merry Christmas. December 14th is the feast of mystic, poet, and reformer, St. John of the Cross. St. Teresa of Avila enlisted his assistance in reforming the Carmelite order. The proposed reforms didn't go over well, and John was imprisoned. Rather than become discouraged or defiant, John turned to prayer. His time in prison resulted in some of the greatest mystical poetry the Church has seen. After his escape, his efforts were recognized and honored by the Carmelites. While he was appointed to the highest office in his order, dissension forced him into solitude again. Following Christ isn't always easy, nor will it always be received well by everyone around us. John of the Cross teaches us that these challenges can be opportunities to unite ourselves closer to Jesus.
